Canada and Australia in new stem cell partnership

Stem cell research companies in Canada and Australia have teamed up to support increased research and development in both countries.

The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) and Stem Cells Australia (SCA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which the pair claim will “increase the translation” of stem cell research.

According to a press release from the two companies, the MoU will “accelerate translation” of Australian discoveries into new research tools through CCRM's “unique role” in IP development.

CCRM will join forces with researchers from universities and research organisations across Australia through SCA, a research council that brings together the country’s life scientists to address questions posed by stem cell science.

The companies add that exploring the potential of stem cells and their regenerative capacity has been a “core focus” of medical research in Canada and Australia for many years.

Michael May, chief executive of CCRM said the MoU was an “excellent opportunity to flow new IP” through its due diligence process that may complement existing technologies it is reviewing.

"Being able to review disclosures from Canada and Australia will enhance CCRM's ability to identify the most promising discoveries for commercialisation," May added.

Martin Pera, programme leader of Stem Cells Australia, said the partnership will give scientists the means to interact with CCRM's industry partners to “showcase their technical expertise and know-how”.

CCRM representatives will travel to Australia in October 2014 as guests of SCA.
