President Obama hails science, technology and innovation

President Barack Obama has praised scientists and the technology industry at the honorary ceremony for scientists at the White House.

In his speech, which took place on May 19 but was published on May 31, he assured that America is constantly pushing Congress to finance the work of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to keep the country “on cutting-edge”.

Obama highlighted the achievements of three scientists, Shirley Ann Jackson, Mark Humayan and Mary-Claire King.

“They illustrate why this is such an extraordinary moment to be a scientist in this country.  America’s progress in science and technology has countless revolutionary discoveries within our reach,” said the president.

The three scientists have been involved in shaping scientific public policies, restoring sight for blind people, and cancer research, respectively.

Obama honoured the scientists with the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
