Womble Bond Dickinson hires patent team

Biopharmaceutical patent partner leads team of technical advisors and an associate in California | Partner experienced in patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and assessing infringement validity in the pharma and biotech industry.

Womble Bond Dickinson has bagged a new patent team led by partner Stephanie Seidman, based in San Diego, California.

The team, comprised of Seidman, an associate, and four technical advisors, make the move from Dentons.

Seidman brings experience in advising clients within the biopharmaceutical industry on matters related to patent portfolio development and commercialisation.

Her work consists of drafting and prosecuting a multitude of patents covering pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and chemical innovations, including intricate technologies.

Seidman’s practice includes patent prosecution, conducting freedom-to-operate analysis, assessing non-infringement and validity, as well as IP due diligence work in financial transactions and acquisitions.

Preston Heard, who oversees the patent prosecution and litigation practice group at Womble said: “Two of the country’s primary life science hubs are in Boston and San Diego. We have an incredible group in Boston, and the addition of Stephanie and her team deepens our capabilities to serve life sciences clients in California and further strengthens our nationwide patent prosecution and litigation practice."

Seidman is particularly known for her representation of emerging and developing companies, both private and public, within the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

Her expertise spans a wide range of fields, including molecular biology, therapeutic proteins, small molecules, chemical processes, immunology, screening, stem cells, immunotherapies, and diagnostics.

Ryan Cagle, who leads the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech team at Womble, said: "Stephanie and her team bring a powerful combination of legal talent and strong technical backgrounds that will greatly benefit our clients. Before entering private practice, Seidman served as a patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

In addition to Seidman, the newly expanded team at Womble Bond Dickinson includes:

Associate, Laura Westergard who specialises in patent prosecution and counselling within the fields of life sciences, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals.

Technical advisor, Karen Chiu, whose expertise lie in patent prosecution within the life sciences, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical domains.

Daniel Kremer as a technical advisor who focuses on patent prosecution related to cell therapies and immunotherapy.

Whitney Melroy-Greif a technical advisor whose work centres on genetic engineering, molecular biology, and cellular biology within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Finally, technical advisor Julie Paxman who holds a doctoral degree in molecular and quantitative biology from the University of California, San Diego.
