Fujifilm taken to court over breast imaging system

Diagnostic company Hologic has filed a complaint against Fujifilm for allegedly infringing its patents covering a breast imaging system.

The case was filed on Monday, June 26, at the US District Court for the District of Connecticut.

Hologic said that Fujifilm had infringed its product Selenia Dimensions, which Hologic claims is the first “digital breast tomosynthesis system” to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The patents involved are US numbers 7,831,296; 8,452,379; 7,688,940; 7,986,765 and 7,123,684.

Fujifilm announced in January this year that it had received premarket approval from the FDA for a digital breast tomosynthesis system.

Hologic said that Fujifilm had knowledge of its Selenia Dimensions product and therefore had willfully infringed its patents.

It added that it had been damaged in an amount “yet to be determined”.

Hologic has asked the court to permanently enjoin Fujifilm from further carrying out the alleged infringement.

The company also asked to be awarded damages, costs for bringing the case to court, and demanded a jury trial.
