Name: Alain Fuchs

Organisation: French National Center for Scientific Research

Position: President

Alain Fuchs is president of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the largest government research organisation in France.

After being appointed in 2010, Fuchs strengthened links between the CNRS and French universities.

According to the “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2016” report, published last year, the CNRS is a leading filer of pharmaceutical patents among universities and public research organisations.

"the CNRS is a leading filer of pharmaceutical patents among universities."

The report showed that CNRS has increased its patent filings worldwide for selected origins from 484 in 2010 to 532 in 2013. In that time the organisation’s total number of patent families was 2,017.

In addition, the report showed that CNRS is an outstanding contributor to technology patents for universities.

The CNRS’ patents covered in the report included those relating to organic fine chemistry and measurements.

The report said that from 2011 to 2015, the organisation had 825 women patent inventors who filed 846 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications.

During his first term, Fuchs helped maintain scientific excellence within the CNRS; he was reappointed in 2014.

Earlier in his career, in 1995 he worked as a senior professor in chemistry at the University of Paris-Sud and directed the physical chemistry of amorphous materials laboratory there from 1997 to 2000.

He also worked as professor of chemistry at the Pierre and Marie Curie University from 2006 to 2010.
