LSIPR 50 2018: Bernard Tyson

Name: Bernard Tyson

Organisation: Kaiser Permanente

Position: CEO

It will possibly come as little surprise to hear that Bernard Tyson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente, was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in 2017.

Having worked at Kaiser Permanente for more than 33 years, he has managed all major aspects of the organisation, including working as hospital administrator and division president, as well as chief operating officer.

As CEO, Tyson helps drive the organisation’s focus on delivering affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare to its members. Claiming to offer one of the US’s largest not-for-profit health plans, the integrated healthcare provider now serves 12 million members in eight states, as well as Washington, DC.

Tyson oversees 200,000 employees and 22,600 Permanente Medical Group physicians, all committed to providing technologically advanced care solutions.

The business is made up of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and its subsidiaries, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and the Permanente Medical Groups.

"$72.7 billion: Kaiser Permanente's annual operating revenue in 2017."

Rather than treating disease, Tyson’s focus has largely been on public health and preventive care.

The Kaiser Permanente CEO has also been named the most influential healthcare executive by business publication Modern Healthcare for four consecutive years.

Tyson obtained a master’s degree of business in health service administration, alongside a bachelor’s degree in health service management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also earned a leadership certificate from Harvard University.

In 2017, Kaiser Permanente recorded annual operating revenue of $72.7 billion, up from $64.6 billion in 2016.
