LSIPR 50 2018: Mike Young

Name: Mike Young

Organisation: Roche

Position: Chief IP Counsel and Vice President

As chief vice president and chief IP counsel at pharmaceutical and diagnostics company Roche Diagnostics Corporation, Mike Young has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders.

One of his key duties is to lead the development and implementation of Roche’s IP strategies that are part of the business strategies in each of Roche’s business areas. These include applied science; professional diagnostics hospital; diabetes care; molecular diagnostics and physician office laboratory.

"Young takes a leading role in establishing an IP strategy and direction that produces tangible results."

When he isn’t busy implementing Roche’s business strategies, Young works with the business’s chief patent officer, global patent leadership team, Roche IP site leaders and local and global business area leaders—including various functional areas of research and development, marketing, commercial operations, business development and licensing.

To ensure Roche establishes itself in a competitive market, it must identify itself as a key player. This is partially achieved through enforcing its IP strategy and trademarks. Young’s vital role in reaching this aim sees him work alongside Roche’s worldwide head of trademarks to shape and set Roche’s global IP strategy.

In addition, Young takes a leading role in establishing an IP strategy and direction that produces tangible results.

His skills and experience were put into practice in February this year when Roche announced the acquisition of healthcare technology company Flatiron Health, which has a focus on accelerating cancer research and improving patient care.

The acquisition, worth close to $2 billion, will combine the two companies’ experience in delivering oncology research and development.
