Cannabis companies sign licensing deal on edible product

Canadian cannabis manufacturing company, Chemesis International, has signed an agreement with GSRX Industries, a Puerto-Rico based dispensary, to manufacture an edible cannabis product on the island.

The agreement, announced yesterday, January 17, covers the Dragonglass Flake and Bake, a patent-pending edible that comes in different colours and flavours.

Under the deal, Chemesis subsidiary Natural Ventures will make the product for Project 1493, a subsidiary of GSRX Industries.

Puerto Rico allows cannabis to be used for medical purposes, but not recreationally, while Canada has legalised both types of use.

GSRX Industries is reportedly one of Puerto Rico’s largest operators of medicinal cannabis dispensaries. On its website, it says “we have tons of great product for you with various ways of consumption”.

According to the press release, Dragonglass Flake and Bake contains natural THC powder and is produced via a proprietary water-based cannabinoid infusion method.

Project 1493 will provide formulas, equipment, technology and training, the release explained, adding that Chemesis and Project 1493 will split the net profits equally.

CEO of Chemesis, Edgar Montero, said: “Chemesis believes the patent-pending proprietary technology could revolutionise the industry in Puerto Rico with its fast onset and versatile methods of consumption.”

In November last year,  LSIPR reported that Roche, Boehringer Ingelheim and AbbVie are leading the way in patenting of products containing cannabidiol, a chemical found in cannabis.

According to a report by Clarivate Analytics, the companies scored highly in areas including quality and strength of their portfolios, measured by breadth of geographic filing, the existence of granted patents and the inventions’ technical breadth.
