FDA to destroy counterfeit drug shipments

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a rule enabling it to destroy certain drugs that have been refused entry into the US.

The FDA announced the rule, which is set to clamp down on counterfeit drugs entering the country, via the Federal Register on Tuesday, September 15.

Under the new powers, the owner or consignee of the detained drug is issued a notice of detention and is given the opportunity to respond to the FDA’s proposed destruction.

The rule will only apply to medicines valued at $2,500 or less.

It was estimated in 2013 by the Government Accountability Office that there were more than 34,000 rogue internet pharmacies.
