WIPO unveils course on genetic resources in the life sciences

The World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) has launched a course on IP and genetic resources in the life sciences.

The course (DL-427), announced on April 29, is now open for registration on the WIPO eLearning Center website.

As a joint collaboration between the WIPO Academy and WIPO’s Traditional Knowledge Division, the course serves as an introduction to strategic IP rights management in the commercialisation of genetic resources and data in the life sciences fields.

The course is aimed at executives of life science enterprises and innovators who wish to learn more about how to incorporate IP strategies into their business models, and bring their life science innovations to the market.

According to WIPO, policymakers can also benefit from taking the course to learn about the latest trends and technologies in the field of genetic resources and data.

Once the course concludes, participants will be invited to receive advanced training and information resources on the use of WIPO’s services for IP rights management in genetic resources and data, as facilitated by WIPO’s Traditional Knowledge Division.

The DL-427 course covers a range of topics in the area of genetic resources and data in the life sciences, including: branches of IP law and policy relevant to the use of genetic resources and data in the life sciences; emerging issues in genetic resources law and policy, and related technologies; relevant legal instruments and international policy processes; and practical IP issues on genetic resources and data in the life sciences for policymakers and executives.

Upon the successful completion of the course and a final assessment, participants will be awarded a WIPO Academy certificate of completion. The DL-427 course is currently available in English.

Registration is open until May 16, 2021 for the session starting on May 31, 2021. WIPO has said that as space is limited in the executive course, eligible applicants will be admitted on a first come, first served basis.

For all inquiries, please email the course mailbox at DL427E.academy@wipo.int.
