Dykema adds senior counsel to IP team

ANDA litigation expert brings chemical, biotech, and pharmaceutical experience to the firm.

Dykema has added  Karen Poppel as senior counsel to its IP department.

Based in Washington DC, Poppel will provide experience in patent, trademark, trade secret, and commercial litigation with a strong background in chemistry-related IP matters.

Poppel, who moved from  RatnerPrestia, has over a decade of experience in the chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Her expertise extends to navigating  Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) litigation, where she has represented patent holders.

Poppel’s litigation experience also includes advocating for clients both domestically and internationally in federal courts and before the  Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Eric Fingerhut, the managing member of Dykema’s Washington, DC office and a member of the firm’s IP department, said: “With her background in chemistry and experience with specialised IP litigation, Karen will serve as a valuable resource to Dykema and its clients.”

Poppel is a co-author of a publication from the  American Bar Association, titled “ANDA Litigation: Strategies and Tactics for Pharmaceutical Patent Litigators,” Chapter 3, Notice and Pre-Filing Considerations (3d. 2020).

She earned a J.D., with honours, from the  George Washington University Law School, as well as an M.S. in chemistry from  Emory University and a B.S. in chemistry from  Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

While at law school, she served as a judicial extern to  John Facciola in the  US District Court for the District of Columbia.
