Video interview: Promising patent developments in China

Recent developments in China’s patent law and practice offer an exciting outlook for the future, said a senior partner at Wanhuida Peksung.

Sam Li spoke at Life Sciences Patent Network North America, an event hosted by LSIPR in Boston earlier this year.

“China is recognising the precedential value of the case law—it’s going in the right direction,” he said.

Jiancheng Jiang, senior partner at the firm and a WIPR Leader, outlined some of the challenges the life sciences industry is facing.

The uncertainty of whether new technology in the life sciences arena can be protected by a patent is one such challenge.

Patent issuance is not only a challenge to the industry but to governments and legislative parties, he said, adding that more of an effort should be made to really look at what the subject matter of patent protection should be.
