Haynes Boone expands practice with ex-Procopio life sciences leader

New recruit, who joins the firm’s Orange County office, brings patent experience in genomics, immunology and gene editing technologies.

Haynes Boone has appointed Jeff Morton as a partner to the firm’s office in Orange County, US, and its Intellectual Property Practice Group.

Morton joins from Procopio, where he was leader of the Life Sciences Group and co-leader of the Licensing and Technology Transactions Practice.

Based in San Diego, Morton is an IP lawyer focusing on the life sciences industry, where he primarily works on clients’ patent strategy and prosecution.

His patent experience includes genomics, immunology, and gene editing technologies, and he advises on complex freedom-to-operate life sciences issues.

He has also been involved in several high-stakes acquisitions in the life sciences industry, said the firm.

“I am excited to join Haynes Boone and its collaborative culture,” Morton said. “The opportunity to help the firm expand its life sciences practice was a key factor, and I look forward to leveraging my experience to serve the firm’s clients.”

Morton, who holds a PhD in immunology, originally practised in Canada before moving to the US a decade ago. He continues to do cross-border work with international clients, representing them in US IP matters.

Beyond his day job, Morton is the current chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the San Diego County Bar Association, and volunteers with a number of local charitable organisations.

He is also an author and presenter, having written for many publications, spoken at various events and presented podcasts.

Orange County Office managing partner Greg Michelson commented: “We are delighted to welcome Jeff as our firm continues to strategically grow its footprint in Southern California.

“Jeff’s deep understanding of the life sciences industry, especially in the hotbed of San Diego, will be invaluable as we continue to grow our office and our Life Sciences Practice Group.”

Haynes Boone said that Morton is the sixth partner to join the firm’s Orange County office since September, with the five other recruits covering corporate law, M&A, litigation, venture capital and real estate.
