Former Novartis attorney takes patent expertise to Foley Hoag

Firm adds counsel to IP department in Boston office | Ex-senior patent attorney at Novartis brings broad range of life sciences experience.

Foley Hoag has continued to grow its life sciences IP team with the addition of Erin Foley, who joins as counsel in the IP department in the firm’s Boston office.

Previously a senior patent attorney at Novartis, Foley creates and implements global patent and exclusivity strategies, conducts IP diligence and provides patent support in partnership and licensing negotiations.

She will become a member of Foley Hoag’s patent prosecution, strategy & management and Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings practices.

Foley has advised early-stage, mid-sized and commercial companies across the life sciences industry, in areas including gene editing, gene therapy, viral vector engineering, RNA-based therapies, monoclonal antibodies, CAR-T therapies, stem cell therapies, vaccines, antimicrobial therapies, DNA sequencing, and food science.

As a doctoral student at the University of California San Diego, Foley studied the endocytic clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins by the hepatic heparan sulfate proteoglycan syndecan-1.

Foley Hoag expanded its patent prosecution practice in 2023 with the hire of Amy Baker Mandragouras and her team from Cooley.

Baker Mandragouras, a partner in the firm’s Boston office, said: “Erin’s arrival will bring additional scientific depth to our leading biotech practice.

“Her deep experience in global issues of product life-cycle management will be a key resource for our clients. She is an exceptional addition to the firm.”
