Arizona man sentenced to prison for trafficking counterfeit drugs

An Arizona-based man was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for trafficking counterfeit pet pharmaceutical products into the US.

Allen Smith, 50, was sentenced on Monday, February 6 by Judge David Hittner of the US District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Smith was also fined $867,000 in restitution and ordered to forfeit approximately $42,000 worth of illicit proceeds.

He was found to be responsible for trafficking more than $1 million worth of veterinary products that were not manufactured for the US market and had false labels.

According to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Smith intentionally trafficked the products to deceive retail stores and consumers into believing that the products had received the necessary Environmental Protection Agency authorisation.

Some of the products sold under false labels include Merial’s Frontline and Frontline Plus, as well as Bayer’s Advantage and K9 Advantix products.
