Carpmaels & Ransford adds partner with UPC focus

New partner brings pharma and chemistry focus, and boosts the European firm’s Unified Patent Court team.

European IP firm Carpmaels & Ransford has hired a partner who will specialise in cases that will be brought before the upcoming Unified Patent Court (UPC).

Agathe Michel-de Cazotte was appointed as of today, September 1 2022, moving from Hogan Lovells.

She joins Carpmaels’ dispute resolution group ahead of the imminent opening of the UPC.

Michel-de Cazotte is experienced in advising clients on how to make the most of the UPC, and has represented clients in major cross-border patent litigations in France, the UK, Germany, and in EPO oppositions for more than a decade.

Her appointment adds to Carpmaels’ team of litigators and patent attorneys across Europe.

Hugh Goodfellow, managing partner at Carpmaels, said: “Agathe’s wealth of experience in pan-European patent litigation, for both major multinationals and innovative SMEs, makes her a great asset to Carpmaels.

“Her extensive knowledge and advisory work in relation to the soon-to-be-launched UPC will be particularly vital in the run-up to the opening of that court, and the cases for our clients that will inevitably follow.”

Michel-de Cazotte’s practice has a strong focus on pharma and chemistry, and she is experienced in defending telecom innovators in standard-essential patents (SEP), including  fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) issues.

She also covers non-practising entity (NPE) litigation, as well as pharma clients in blockbuster formulation, method of treatment and second medical use patents.

Her experience of blue-chip companies means that she brings a strong understanding of the technological and business drivers behind agreements and litigation related decisions.
