Barnes & Thornburg welcomes life sciences IP litigator

Barnes & Thornburg has welcomed David Kelly as a partner to its IP department.

Kelly, based in Barnes & Thornburg’s Atlanta office, joins the firm from Hunton & Williams, where he chaired the life sciences department.

He works with clients in fields such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, molecular diagnostics, synthetic biology, and biotechnology.

Kelly’s experience as a patent litigator includes managing IP due diligence, overseeing international patent prosecution dockets, and acting as counsel at the US Patent and Trademark Office and federal district courts.

He has acted as lead trial lawyer in cases involving patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and false advertising. He has successfully obtained summary judgment of patent validity and invalidity and obtained sanctions against competitors.

Julia Gard, chair of the firm’s IP department, said Kelly’s “tactful ability and experience in successfully litigating high-stakes, multi-million dollar patent infringement cases will be a great advantage to our national practice visibility”.

Stuart Johnson, managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg’s Atlanta office, added that “our region’s tech ecosytem is one of the fastest growing in the US, which makes David’s medical and tech-focused legal practice directly applicable to the strategic opportunities we see in our region and elsewhere”.
